Change from email address?

leedjc 12 Apr, 2008
Hi all

I've been using chronoforms for a little while now and find it really great.

I have a quick question - is it possible to change the from email address to an email field submitted in the form, so it looks as though the form was emailed from the persons email address?

I want to do this because we reply to a lot of form submissions each day, but copying and pasting the email address from the body of the email is a bit of a bind. I was hoping to make things a little easier.

Thanks!

Hi leedjc,

I will assume that your form has a field name called "email" for the user to enter his/her email address, so you will go to the "Special fields" tab and at the "From Email Field" you will write "email", this way, the value in the "email" field will be the from email of the form!!😉

Cheers

Sorry to reopen an older forum posting...

I tried this and I still see my own email in the email field when you hit reply. I put the Email field name (which is what the sender filling out the form enters in his email address) in the Special Fields "From email field" ....I then tested the form and it doesn't put the person's email address in the address field when I click Reply.

A very important feature this is for so many people .... I managed to do this once before on an old site of mine but doesn't seem to want to work here this time. This is on a joomla 1.5.5 site using your most recent version of chronoforms (which I downloaded today).

Thanks in advance.

hello,

as long as you don't enter anything in the "Special fields" and you enter a valid email address in the General->From email field, that should work.

I agree, the feature is not yet supported at the new BETA, Bob was always saying that it doesn't work and make problems so I omitted it for a while!

also it depends on the mail server I guess ? on my yahoo or my thunderbird I click Reply and the "From email" is loaded in the "To" area!

is there a way of temporary doing it manually in the form code?

Hi, do you write the "email field name of the user" in the "Dynamic from email" field ?

Hi leedjc,

As Max said we had quite a lot of problems when people put user's emails into the ReplyTo Email field. Many ISPs (but not all) check that the ReplyTo address for an email matches the domain of the site generating it (or is at least one for which the DNS point to them). If there isn't a match then there is a good chance that the email will be marked as spam and bounced or just dropped.

This is simply because domain mismatches are one of the most common features of spam and the process of using 'other' domains to send email - relaying - is heavily disapproved of.

The workaround that seems to do the trick is to add a ReplyTo link in the body of the email using the mailto:user@example.com link style.

Hey Guys -

I'm new to these forums - but I have been using the ChronoForm Component for about 6 months now with NO Complaints - 😀 (Awesome Component!!)

That is until I tried to hit REPLY to someone who used the form to email me, and I realized that I was emailing back to MYSELF 😲 (the email address that I used to create the form with in the "ReplyTo email: " field of the General Tab.

I want to thank you all for the info in this Forum Thread - what you have posted here has WORKED FOR ME! I know that it didnt for some people - but putting the word "email" in the "From email field:" under the Special Fields Tab WORKED for me. 🤔 I will note that my email field in my form WAS named "email" and that may very well be WHY this worked - the writer was unclear on this - but as I said - this fix worked! 🤔

Thank You ALL again! 😛
