Chronoform V4 installation on Joomla 1.7

Ron 18 Sep, 2011
Hello

I have been using chronoform V3 on joomla 1.5 for over a year now and I must say I have been happy till today. I am now upgrading my website to Joomla 1.7 and I have decised to use chronoform V4.

When I install the forms it gets installed successfully but gives me an error " error writting the Administrative menu" and when I uninstall it give me an error "Could not delete the administrator menus".

I have tried installing and uninstalling many time but no result. I went through many articles but I could not find any solution for 1.7

Could some one help

Thanks

Ron

Hi Ron,

Please make sure that you are installing the Joomla! 1.6/1.7 version of ChronoForms v4. One of the changes from Joomla! 1.5 was in the way that Joomla! handles the Admin menus.

Hi BOB,,
I made sure it is for Joomla 1.6/1.7 but I get the following msg:"Installing component was successful."
Error building Admin Menus

And when I uninstall I get : Uninstalling component was successful. Could not delete the administrator menus.

Thanks for the help

Hi Ron,

Sorry, nothing else to suggest. My installation ran OK on Joomla! 1.7 and I've seen no other reports of this error.

Bob

PS The uninstall error is presumably just because they were never installed in the first place.

Do you know of any files that are left behind on an uninstall ? I may what to delete them manually.

Thanks

Hi Ron,

There's a list of files in the administrator/components/com_chronoforms/chronoforms.xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<extension type="component" version="1.6.0" method="upgrade">

The problem you are having is most likely with the <menu> and <submenu> groups and the related <language> files.

Thanks for all the help BOB.
I had to do a bigger job. I reinstalled 1.7 and installed V4. It went smooth.

Thanks again

Hello,

I installed the V4 of Chronoforms but I am not really happy with it. It does not seem to fit my expectation. Either it is too advanced or it still has a lot of modifications to go before it is suitable for Joomla 1.7.

I have been using the V3 with Joomla 1.5 and I am very happy working with chronoforms. But on Joomla 1.7 the V4 upsets me.

I had tried the beta version of V4 on Joomla 1.6 months ago and I gave up as I found the same situation that I find today. Some people I find mention that it works like Charm. I am wondering how ?

I made a simple contact form but the display is not proper in Joomla 1.7 the distance of 150 or 200 makes no change on display. The fill columns stick to the label text.

When I make a form in wizard and I enter a Text Label nothing changes (though it changes in html) but in a large form it will be confusing. I have attached a screen shot please view.

Chronoforms play a very important part in my website and now I am thinking of switching to RSforms. But I am scared I have got used to Chronoforms. Would some one suggest me the right action to take ?

I am not a code expert I can just make things work by learning But there are a lot of people out there who are truly experts. How may have been using the Chronoform V4 on Joomla 1.7 and what is the ultimate view? Would someone mention ? Your views will make things easier for me...

Best Wishes

Ron

Hi Ron,

Sorry you are having problems. I agree that the CFv4 admin is very different and not always intuitive :-(

The 'fill columns sticking to the label text' sounds as though the ChronoForms CSS isn't being loaded fro some reason. It is turned on by default. You can check by Clicking the 'Name' link in the Forms Manager and scrolling down to 'Load ChronoForms files'. Id that is set to yes then there may be something in your template the is blocking the load - the RokZip plug-in is the main culprit that I have seen for this.

The Text Label changes once you have saved the form - it doesn't change when you first save the form element modal window though.

Hi Ron,

True, but the form names under that heading are clickable.

Hey Bob,

thanks for all that support. I know you have been working very hard, sometimes I find you online at odd hours when the world is sleeping and you are still working.

I have gone through the V4 in detail and have tried to make things work for me but. I am sad I may have to leave Chronoforms for Joomla 1.7 as I feel I will not be able to do what I did in V3. I may not be able to duplicate my work in V4 from V3. I feel people at Chronoforms still have a long way to go before it could come up to the fast upgrading speed of Joomla.

Chronoform V4 is not anyway close to V3. The ease and workability of V3 is very good. But it is becoming obsolete now. So thanks for all the support. I will close the topic on V4, as I may have to move to other products that make it easier for me to work.

I will wish you all the best for V4 to some day become like the V3 if not better. I will stick to V3 for time being as Joomla 1.5 is still there for some time and keep working with some other product for mt Joomla site upgrade to 1.7.😶

Thanks

Ron

Hi Ron,

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with CFv4. I sympathise with you having struggled to find my own way round.

Now that I am starting to get familiar with it I'm convinced that CFv4 is a much better form engine than CFv3. It has an enormous amout of flexibility and extensibility. Apart from some of the ChronoConnectivity features I can't think of many form features that are more difficult in CFv4.

Good luck,

Bob

Thanks for the comments BOB,

I do not find proper documentations on the V4. I agree new advancements make things more better but it is of no use if one does not know how to use it.

Can you suggest some tutorials that would cover video as well ? I would also like to know if the JS Script that I made in V3 would work with the V4 as well ?

Ron
