Double Dropdown with Country first then State / Province?

andrew222 28 Aug, 2014
Hi,

In Chronoforms V4 have the task to create a form with a double dropdown that displays USA | Canada | United Kingdom in the first dropdown and then the second one contains all the US States, the Canadian Provinces and the UK counties. The second dropdown displays it's values depending on what country is chosen.

I've already purchased the CF v4 Using Ajax pdf tutorial but was a little disappointed to see that the example uses the .sql data from the United States file from GeoPostcodes.com which costs another $30. I can't even follow the tutorial as I don't even know what format the data is and how it's presented within the table. I found out after emailing Greyhead.net that there are free samples on the site but these are in CSV format and not .sql

I then found another document at http://greyhead.net/how-to-docs/chronoforms-double-drop-down-with-ajax for another $3 but am unsure as to what the example actually covers a tutorial on Countries / States or a tutorial on recipes plus it was designed for Joomla 1.5 which is pretty ancient now.

I would really appreciate any help in finding any relevant examples on this forum as I'm sure it's a popular request. Once I work it all out the I'll post the final working code here on the forum to save others hours of looking around and buying out of date tutorials.

I've tried using V5 but get time out errors and there's bugs with having too many containers which cause the contents to get deleted which is very frustrating. I only have 12 containers and a total of 50 elements so switched back to V4 😉

Thanks,

Andrew

Never mind, I sorted it. Can't post the code though as I switched to BreezingForms for this job as a lot easier for complicated tasks plus more up to date examples.

Will still continue to use chronoforms though but just for regular minimal contact forms

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply but I did find that post quite a while ago as it's dated Oct 2012 and the link is also on a lot of other posts. Unfortunately it's extremely vague. At first glance (to the average person) it looks like a solution but after further reading it just gets too complicated, especially regarding where to put the snippets of code.

Other people that have requested the same info and in replies have been given the same link but if you look further into the site they want to use it on you find they've actually given up and used something else.

As for the http://greyhead.net/how-to-docs/chronoforms-v4-using-ajax that I previously mentioned I think you should let people know before purchasing it that there is no data to test it with so really it's not much help. You need the data so you can adjust it to match your own data. Must be a good little earner though with 6720 hits and costing $5 ;-)

I do like Chronoforms and have used it for years but have wasted way too many hours trying to get things to work correctly. A double dropdown should be more straight forward to create as they are with other brands of Joomla forms. I've never used Breezingforms before and worked it out in in 15 mins.

Chronoforms 5 is too buggy at the moment and simply frustrates especially when container contents get deleted.

I know this is a lengthy post but I hope Chronoforms catches up with the rest of the Joomla forms as you would probably keep a lot more users / Subscriptions.

Thanks for your time,

Andrew
