Create Public viewable forum, but require login to create/edit/reply to posts

mbruell 02 Jun, 2014
Hi,

I've created a forum for use by our staff (once they login) that serves as a For Sale and Wanted list. Users can create posts, edit their posts, reply to others' posts, and include attachments. This forum is only viewable to our staff once they login.

I'm trying to set up another forum that doesn't require a login that would allow potential employees to view posts about Rental Properties that our current employees have for rent. I'd like to require a login to that forum if users want to create/edit/reply to posts in that section.

Finally, I'd like users to be notified by email when someone has responded to their post.

Thanks so much!

Marc

Hi Marc,

Please enable the "Forums permissions" setting under the "Settings" area then configure each forum's permissions distinctly under the Forums edit section!

Thanks for getting back to me. I have enabled the forum permissions, but am still required to login to access the posts.

For this forum I have the following permissions: Display/Access allowed for Public, Staff Members, and Super Users. All other permissions on this forum are inherited.

I have the same permissions set for Read/View Topics (on Chronoforums Admin Home:: Permissions).

Is it possible that I'm testing my link incorrectly? The only way I know to test it is to navigate to the forum through my logged in session, copy that URL, and then enter that URL into another browser (while not logged in).

I haven't worked much with joomla, though others on my team have. I haven't created a separate menu item for this particular forum (that's publicly available), and am wondering if that's the issue.

Thanks,

Marc

Hi Marc,

After doing any changes to the permissions in Chronoforums, you should reset your session, that means you should logout if you are logged in, or login if you are logged out, then test!

So in order to test public permissions, and if you are not logged in, then log in and after that log out and then you can test!

Thanks - I had wondered about that too, so have been testing by logging out, and then trying it another, non-logged in browser. I went ahead and logged into the site using my test browser, then logged out. It's still not working.

If I copy the URL to the forum when I'm logged in, and then paste into a logged in session, it works. However it fails if I'm not logged in, and brings me to the login page with the following appended to our domain:

/component/users/?view=login

Once I enter my login credentials, it takes me to the forum.

Could the location of the forum on my website (must be logged into see it) be making a difference here? Is there another way I should be testing this (using another link)?

Thanks,

Marc

Answer
Hi Marc,

Please do your testing with the forum under a public menu item, you may get confused when you are working with 2 permissions sets, the menu permissions from Joomla and the forums permissions!

Thanks - I've asked my teammates for help with this. I'll report back. Thanks!

Yeah, separate locations for the two forums was what was needed. Thanks!
