Displaying checkbox group in multiple columns

I have a checkbox group which has many items. I need to display the items in 2 columns. Have been reading this forum and the recommendation is to use "custom element". Being new to web development, I am not familiar on how to use custom element.

Is there anyone who can share their sample codes on how to display checkbox group in 2 columns using custom element?

Using a custom element means that you can use your own HTML code, you can find code for 2 columns chekcboxes somewhere online, just do a quick Google search or a search on the forums here.
