How do you upgrade to a new version?

karnedge 16 Apr, 2008
I tried looking through the FAQs and the forums but could not find anything on upgrading to a new version. I do apologize if there is already a topic.

I am using Joomla 1.5.2 and ChronoContact v2.5 RC2.

To upgrade, do you need to use "Backup Form" on each form you have, uninstall old version, install new version then use "Restore Form"?

I noticed in the XML that the uninstall deletes the chronocontact databases or even drops if it exists if installed. This seemed a bit odd, so I tried to upload all the new files manually but ended up getting an error on an almost blank admin screen. Of course I reloaded the old files and it worked again. Then I reuploaded the new files again and then it worked.

Are you going to change it so it doesn't drop the database in the future so you can just uninstall and reinstall, so it doesn't break your links?

Hi karnedge,

Usually the easiest upgrade is simply to FTP the new files over the existing installation. The only real exceptions are (a) when Max has made a database change and then he usually creates a dummy form to do that for you, or (b) if there's a change in the folder structure which is pretty rare.

The only time we recommend doing 'Backup' then 'Restore' is if you are upgrading quite an old version to the current one.

Of course it's prudent to take a backup of the database tables first just in case something goes wrong!

Hi Bob, Hi Max,

I would like to point you to a Script which has an included Update Script inside the Install Package.
<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.phoca.cz">www.phoca.cz</a><!-- w -->
check out his Gallery Component, which has the update functionality built in.
Looks very simple to me, and works well.

If you could include such a script into chronoforms, I am sure that everyone would love it.

Hi Bob,
Can you confirm if we can actually FTP to upgrade from
RC1 -> RC2 -> RC3

In other words, no database changes in these versions?
Only asking as it seems karnedge has done that and had some issues.

Many thanks,

- Vince

Hi Vince,

I upgraded that way. didn`t have a Problem

Hi Vince,

As far as I know there are no database changes in either of these upgrades. I haven't had time to look at RC3 yet but Max said that it was mostly bug-fixes and some improvements to the PlugIns.

There isn't any database changes. I just had to redo the upload. I think the FTP messed up the first time it uploaded and scrambled the files. So I uploaded a backup of the previous version then redid the new version again and it works just fine. I'm trying the RC 3.1 now.<br><br>Post edited by: karnedge, at: 2008/04/18 05:49
