Can't create form with newly installed version

ve6sar 21 Nov, 2007
I've just installed Chronoforms for the first itme and went to work through the tutorial but I ran into a few problems.
1. No configuration option in Components>Chrono Forms
2. When I click the "new" icon in the form manager I get a Internet explorer can't display this page error.

I'm running Joomla 1.5 on a Unbuntu LAMP server and the Chrono Form version is 2.5 J1.5 RC1

Hi Sean,

1) Yes, apologies the tutorials haven't kept up with Max's new versions. It's on my to-do list.

2) Not sure about the IE error, I haven't seen that one before. Please can you post the exact error text. Do you have another browser (FF, Flock, Safari, Opera, etc) installed to test in that too?

Bob
ve6sar 21 Nov, 2007
I just installed Firefox for testing and it comes up with a blank page. I looked at the page source and their was nothing there. Here's the IE Error

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

I'll see you you have an old version and try that.

Hi Sean,

What's the link that is shown in the ChronoForms Form manager - the one you click to get to the blank page? Usually this works when nothing else does! I'm wondering if the paths on your site are configured properly.

Hi. I have installed the chronoforms v2.3.6 and am using joomla1.0.3 stable version. I have created a simple form in dreamweaver and pasted it inside html. but when i press the send button, following error message appears. Please help.

Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in C:\xampp\htdocs\joomla1013\modules\mod_s5_quick_contact.php on line 46
GreyHead 23 Nov, 2007
Hi sean,

I think that 'administrator' in the link is the problem. I'm guessing that Joomla redirects any site url with administrator in it to the default admin interface.

You wouldn't normally have a ChronoForms form in the backend.

Bob
GreyHead 23 Nov, 2007
Hi themajiks,

That looks like an error report from another mod 'quick contact' not from ChronoForms. And I'd guess that as you are running on Xampp you don't have a mail server installed. Follow the Xammp docs if you need one.

I tried disabling Legacy mode, no effect I uninstalled and reinstalled with legacy mode disabled still nothing.... What is the url suffix that the browser should be going to when creating a new form?
Max_admin 24 Nov, 2007
Hi Sean,

The URL should be ending with : administrator/index2.php

but this is a submitted form so don't care much about this URL as it will show nothing, did u try to install ChronoForms for J1.5 on a Joomla 1.5 with no legacy mode enabled ?

Cheers

Just installed V2.3.6 for J1.0.13

The install appears ok and the result says Success.

Issue is that there is no configuration tab in the menu

Components > Chrono Forms > Forms Management is there but
Components > Chrono Forms > Configuration isn't

Have uninstalled and re installed, also tried on another server and no different.

Any ideas what's happening?
Max_admin 26 Nov, 2007
Hi yreg,

Thats fine with the latest few versions, the config page has been removed and all options there are now at each form page!

Cheers

Hi yerg,

Apologies, I have it on my to-do list to update the tutorials.

ve6sar 26 Nov, 2007
Yes I did, I just tried installing Chronoforms for J1.0 to see if it would work since I need legacy mode for Fireboard to run and It came up with the following errors

JInstaller::install: There is already a folder called '/var/www/joomla/administrator/components/com_chronocontact/' - Please initially check whether:
Ò€’ the extension is already installed
Ò€’ the file names in the XML file are spelled correctly
Ò€’ there are no xml files listed inside the extension.xml file
Ò€’ all of the files (not including xml files) are correctly listed in the extension.xml file and there are no duplicate entries
Ò€’ there is an empty folder listed from a previous installation attempt

Component Install: Could not copy PHP install file.

The directory it memtions doesn't exist I'm thinking there a registary file some where in joomla that I need to fix but so far I haven't found it.

Hi Sean,

Please check that you are using the right version of ChronoForms (there are different versions for J 1.0.x and J 1.5).

We did see this error a few times trying to install the old J1.0.x on J1.5 as they parse the installation xml files slightly differently (though in that case J 1.5 was being stricter I think).

Hi together!

Got the same problem as Sean has. The version is correct, it is 2.5 J1.5 RC1.zip for Joomla 1.5RC3. Installation went without problems, tried it with and without legacy mode.

However, using Internet Explorer or Firefox leads to a blank page when clicking on "New" in the forms manager. The urls are the way Sean described them. When using Opera clicking "New" shows up with some quite fancy characters, like it doesn't know how to interpret the data.

Maybe it is helpful to add that i have german language support installed in the backend.

Regards, throbanup
throbanup 27 Nov, 2007
Hi again!

Just uninstalled the german languagepacks and repeated the Chrono Forms installation. Seems like it's got nothing to do with it because the error is still there...
GreyHead 27 Nov, 2007
Hi throbanup & Sean,

I've just uninstalled my old version of ChronoForms from Joomla 1.5 and reinstalled the current version. The 'new' link works OK in FireFox, not sure what else to suggest.

I did have a problem uninstalling the old version as I found that default.ttf was locked by the Apache service so I had to stop that to remove the font file.

Hi Bob,

thanks for trying! Since I first experienced this behavior with a webhoster installation i tried it on my local xampp host now, too. It is xampp 1.6.3a on Win XP, with a freshly installed Joomla 1.5 RC3 and Chrono Forms 2.5 J1.5 RC1.zip. The problem remains the same.

Maybe it's just some simple lack of understanding on my side, since the tutorial seems not to be up-to-date. I did the following steps:

1. In the extension manager upload and install 2.5 J1.5 RC1.zip. Feedback: "Install Component Success", so that looks fine.

2. Going to "Components -> Chrono Forms -> Forms Management". No forms are displayed by default.

3. Clicking on "New" to create a new form. A blank page appears again. :unsure:

Did i miss a step? Thanks a lot for your patience!

GreyHead 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

Those sounds exactly the right steps to me.

Please go to your Joomla Global Config | Server tab and set Error Reporting temporarily to Maximum - lets see if that gives some more useful info.

Bob

PS I just had some problems upgrading my J1.0.x version but all is OK now.
throbanup 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Bob,

Joomla error reporting is set to maximum now, but there's no output. PHP error_reporting is set to 6135.
GreyHead 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

Bother!! This is one where we need Max's insight. I guess that if you check the page source it's empty, or almost empty.

Bob
throbanup 28 Nov, 2007
That's right, Bob. The sourcecode is empty with Firefox and IE. In Opera it shows some fancy characters.

Here is a screenshot with the output in Opera:

http://s147458590.online.de/opera-chrononew-output.jpg

And this is what the source looks like in Opera:

http://s147458590.online.de/opera-chrononew-source.jpg

Looks quite strange to me. :blink: I might be totally wrong, but could it be that the mime-type of the content is misinterpreted by some browsers under certain conditions?

GreyHead 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

I agree, that certainly looks like some kind of a binary file being output.

Scratches head . . .

. . . I wonder if something odd is happening with the sample ImageVerifaction image . . .

Please will you try this - in admin.chronocontact.html.php look for this code (line 602 in my version)
	   <tr>
	       <td>Β </td>
	       <td>Sample image: </td>
	       <td><img src='<?php echo $mainframe->getSiteURL(); ?>components/com_chronocontact/chrono_verification.php<?php if($paramsvalues->imtype == '1'){ echo '?imtype=1';} ?>'></td>
	       </tr>
and temporarily comment it out. See if this makes a difference - it should stop the call to chrono_verification.php.

Bob

throbanup 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Bob,

it's still the same with the code snippet you posted commented out. I reloaded the page and cleared the Joomla cache too, just to be sure.

Wish i'd be better with PHP coding so i could try to support you with that...
GreyHead 28 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

Thanks, it was worth a try . . . scratches head more . . .

Bob
Max_admin 29 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

Please try to comment out those lines at admin.chronocontact.html.php(line 89):

$registry = new JRegistry();
		$registry->loadINI( $row->paramsall );
		$paramsvalues = $registry->toObject( );

		JHTML::_('behavior.switcher');
		$contents = '';
		ob_start();
		require_once(JPATH_COMPONENT.DS.'tmpl'.DS.'navigation.php');
		$contents = ob_get_contents();
		ob_clean();

		$document =& JFactory::getDocument();
		$document->setBuffer($contents, 'module', 'submenu');

put /* before them and */ after them, it still gives a blank page ?

Hi!

No more blank page, i get the forms management form now. Looks really good, but i am too tired to test functionality now. I will come back later this day and report how it works.

So far thanks a lot, this seems to be a very helpful and friendly forum!πŸ™‚

Hi all!

It works. B)
Max_admin 30 Nov, 2007
Hi Norbert,

I don't think so, when you try to edit teh form, can you see any of your saved data ? I don't think so, this was just to find where the problem is.

So now and before saving the empty edit page you will get when you open your form for editing again, please uncomment the code and only comment those few lines :

  JHTML::_('behavior.switcher');
        $contents = '';
        ob_start();
        require_once(JPATH_COMPONENT.DS.'tmpl'.DS.'navigation.php');
        $contents = ob_get_contents();
        ob_clean();

What happens now ?

Ah, Can you see the page with the tabs/switch-link ? I guess not!

Cheers

Hi Max,

some of the saved data could not be seen when editing the form. E. g. "From Email" and "From name". I had to input those values again when editing, but since i am new to Chrono Forms i thought that maybe i just hadn't checked out the right way yet. At least it worked.πŸ˜‰

With the changes you suggested i now do see the values in "From Email" and "From name" when editing.

But i am not sure what you mean with the tabs/switch-link? Is the management form tabbed? If this is the case your guess is right, because i really can't see any tabs inside the form!
Max_admin 01 Dec, 2007
Hi Norbert,

Great, then thats fine for now at least, as the form functions very well, Regarding the tabs, I tried to make the J1.5 version with tabs just as the J1.0 version looks but it seems J1.5 still has bugs so this didn't work, tried to use the link-switchers and as you reported it was making the page blank for you ans some other users too but not everybodyπŸ˜‰ , so lets wait till they get this fixed on J1.5

Could you please go to your system info in Joomla and see if this page displays OK ? it has also a link switchers at the top!

Cheers

Hi Max,

system info is displayed with the tabs. They are working, eg. i can switch between them but nevertheless it seems a little buggy because i cannot switch back to other items of the administrator menu! Have to use the browser back button to get out of system info menu first.

Thanks a lot for your help, man. Looks like Chrono Forms really is the solution i was looking for.πŸ™‚

Well I finally got back to working on my site I followed the steps above and my problem is also fixed, but I get the following error at the top of the edit form

Notice: Undefined variable: contents in /var/www/joomla/administrator/components/com_chronocontact/admin.chronocontact.html.php on line 101

Line 101
$document->setBuffer($contents, 'module', 'submenu');

Is this something I should be concerned with?

Sean
GreyHead 04 Dec, 2007
Hi Sean,

Probably it will do no harm, but you can get rid of it by commenting back in the single line: $contents = '';

The message is a PHP warning that this is being used before being assigned.

Bob
yhonghakhap 06 Dec, 2007
Experienced the same problem and the mentioned solution doesn't work in my case. After sometime of tweaking the global settings, I found out that after I disabling the Gzip compression then the Forms Management is working.

Last note, not commenting the codes doesn't affect me.

:)

rasterblaster 23 Dec, 2007
Yep, exqctly same problem for me, and turning off gzip fixed it.

Is that going to slow my site down much? is this a tempoary bug or a feature?

:unsure:
GreyHead 23 Dec, 2007
Hi rasterblaster,

It will make a small difference to your site's speed. If this is a problem than you can always turn GZip back on except when you are using the ChronoForms Form Manager.

This looks like an odd Joomla 1.5 bug so hopefully it will be resolved before they get to final release.

Have you tried J1.5 RC4 yet? Does this have the same problem for you?

Bob
bepos 26 Jan, 2008
Hi everyone,

just installed chronoforms on J!1.5 Stable. I had to disable gzip for getting chronoforms to work. No modifications done in chronoforms!

So the problem still exists in J!1.5, maybe not that stable as the claim it to be.
I guess disabling gzip will get more extensions to work. Going to try others now.

But first chronoforms.

Will let you know if i'll get errors or not.

Hi bepos,

Please turn on GZip again, now ChronoForms doesn't work ?

cool, open navigation.php , find the ('_JEXEC')...line, below it is an empty extra line, remove it please then save the file, does this get ChronoForms to work fine when GZip is ON at Joomla 1.5 ?

Thanks!

Hi admin, I actually read over this whole topic after having the same problem of a blank page when trying to add a new form. The 'gzip turn off' solution worked for me as well. I also tried removing the linebreak from tmpl/navigation.php as you suggested to bepos and that didn't work. I still needed gzip to be off. Hope this helps!

BTW, I love this addon, have been using it for a while successfully for Joomla 1.0.x and hope to provide a little assistance to get it working 100% in 1.5
