I'm going to purchase a subscription and was trying to see what version I have so that I can follow the proper upgrade procedure but I don't see it anywhere. How do I find it?

You can see the version from Site Admin | Extensions | Install/Uninstall | Components.
There is a tutorial on using the full PayPal API with the Plugin but you probably don't need that. Most simple PayPal forms can be more easily created with the ReDirect plugin. There are some examples in the forums here.
