Joomla registration: getting name from two fields

Hi,
I have a form that successfully extends the Joomla registration. The only difference is that I have both the first and last names in separate form fields. Unfortunately defining the Joomla name as a combination thereof doesn't work ("Please insert a name"). How can I combine my two fields so taht I can pass them to Joomla as the name?
