Am I missing something, or is the Placeholder option no longer in the list of items in the forms wizard area? I've seen screenshots in other forums where it is listed with the other form elements. Why am I not seeing it in my installation? I'm using v3.1 RC5.5.

What you are looking for is called "Wizard Custom Element" in recent versions, though I think Max called it custom element as well in the post you linked. You'll find an option for this in the Form Management page, right next to the Form Wizard.
