Replying to emails and from name

kairey 20 Nov, 2009
I have been searching and looking for an answer to a query on the forum and found something from 2007, so I want to know if what was said then is still the case today....

....basically form works great as per the quickstart guide, but its when you come to hit reply in the mail client it replies to the from address (mine) and not the email address the client inputted in the form. I researched this and agree that I would rather have my emails received than going into spam or missing and if this is the only way round this then so be it...

Is it spam friendly to use a Dynamic from field? Then when emails are in my inbox I can see at a glance who sent them as opposed to all having the same from "Admin"?

I will then just set up a reply to link on my email template than can just be clicked to reply...

Hope that makes sense?

Hi Kevin,

Use the Dynamic ReplyTo Name and ReplyTo Email fields. Keep the Form fields static with your site info in them.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the quick reply, I have had it all working correctly it was the spam issues that I was concerned about...

Using the Dynamic reply to name and email does that have any spam issues?

...so it is best to avoid using the static from name, its just that I just get a mail box full of mails from "admin" and cannot see any ones name, however as said above if that is the best way from a spam point of view then I can live with it, Rather receive mails than lose them...

Once this project goes live then its time to sign up for a license, the support from you guys is incredible!!!

Hi Kevin,

If you use the Dynamic ReplyTo options you should see the name OK - In Outlook it says something like "Admin on behalf of XYZ"

Dynamic From is likely to get your emails marked as spam because the sending domain doesn't match the domain of the From email

Have added the dynamic reply to and reply to name, the reply works when clicking reply but it sits in my inbox with only the name "Admin", having said that I use GMail to fetch all my mails so haven't a clue how Outlook would treat it...

Hi Kevin,
As I recall, GMail honors SPF (Sender Profile Framework), which simplified allows the domain owner to specify which email servers are allowed to send mails on behalf of this domain. As such, if you were to use Dynamic From, you'd probably experience that some mails get through without a hitch, while the others end up in the junkbin, or aren't delivered at all.
Also, many email server admins these days put tight restrictions on which domains to relay emails, often resulting in emails simply being dropped if you try to use a sender domain not hosted on the service provider.

Using Reply-To does not affect the sender of the email, only where the sender wishes any replies to be sent. Most email clients these day honor Reply-To, although the behaviour may vary slightly.

One workaround could be to use a static "From Email", but a dynamic "From Name", as most spam milters don't care for what name you use, only the sender domain. This would be best combined with a dynamic Reply-To.

Thanks for that Fredrik

I am happy to work with it how it is to avoid mails been dropped or added to spam, but its when it gets into the hands of the client that the moaning will probably begin, so I will just educate them. At least now when reply is clicked it goes to the dynamic from name and email...
