Switching on/off a field's validation

Hi everyone!

I have a CF with a field that I show/hide using a Javascript function everytime that a certain value is selected from a dropdown listbox. Now what I'd like to do is to enable the field validation only when the field is visible and to disable it when it's hidden using Javascript or PHP. Is it feasable? Do you have any idea?
