ChronoForms 3.1 Will Not Install - Either Way

starfly 04 Apr, 2009
Firstly I must say that I become less of a fan of Joomla everyday (using 1.5.10) so when I sit here trying to install yet another component that keeps failing - I'm becoming even more frustrated, annoyed and ready to delete and start again with a different CMS. However, for a while longer I will persivere (wrong spelling I know)...

I installed ChronoForms 3.1 Stable (ChronoForms_V3.0_Stable.zip). I wanted to be able to place a form in a module and, although I became very confused how to do that (I think I fail to understand what is required or the techie terminology). I downloaded and installed mod_placehere_v122.zip so that I could put a form in a module. That completely lost me. So I promptly gave up on that.

I noticed the newer version of ChronoForms and, unless I'm missunderstanding this, I took it from your info that ChronoForms V3.1 RC3.zip and mod_chronocontact_V1.2_V3.1RC2.zip would enable me to put a form in a module, which is what I want to do. However, I couldn't find RC2 so I grabbed ChronoForms V3.1 RC3.zip and installed in, and mod_chronocontact_V1.2_V3.1RC2.zip.

Problem with RC3 was that every time I created a form, the form did not save any fields. All that appeared was 'Joomla Professional Work' but no fields. I managed to get a module configured with the (empty) form in it though. I deleted the form and tried again. Still no fields appeared. So I figured the installation had failed. So I uninstalled the module and the component.

I went back to your site to download the latest version and grabbed Chronoforms V3.1 RC4.0.zip but, no matter how I try to install it, I can't.
I know that very often it takes a couple of attempt to install modules and components in Joomla but this time, I just could not get Chronoforms V3.1 RC4.0.zip installed. I emptied my 'tmp' folder and uploaded the unzipped files to there. I deleted the component folder from components and administrator/components. Tried again. Still won't install.

While I hold on to my $25 in reluctance to buy more Joomla Components (not that I see any long-term problem with yours) I really do need some help. What can I do?

Quick update. Can no longer install "ChronoForms_V3.0_Stable.zip" either. I get the dreaded Internal Server Error.

Hi Martin,

Sounds like you have an unfriendly ISP and possibly some residual files left over from a previous installation.

Delete any files in the components/com_chronocontact and administrator/components/com_chronocontact folders and then the folders themselves.

Use PHPMyadMin to drop any jos_chrono . . . tables from the database.

Try re-installing again - the extension installer is big and you might be better of doing a manual installation, there are instructions here and in the Joomla help.

Unfriendly is certainly a very diplomatic way of describing the host... lol.

I'll do as you've said and report back. Which version should I go with? I'm really hoping to put the form in a module. Will I be able to do that with "Chronoforms V3.1 RC4.0.zip" and "mod_chronocontact_V1.2_V3.1RC2.zip" or do I need to install "ChronoForms_V3.0_Stable.zip" and figure out how to use "mod_placehere_v122.zip"?

Thanks so far.

Hi Martin,

The more recent releases that Max has made have included many bug-fixes so - unless you have a heavy investment in an earlier version - I'd go for the RC4 that came out yesterday. It's still a Release Candidate but it's stable and any bugs that are found will be fixed in the next release, or we'll post a workaroudn here if there is one.

AFAIK that will work OK with the ChronoForms mod_chronocontact - though that relects a lot of the core code and will proably be updated soon. If you have problems then mod_placehere should still work with RC4.

Delete any files in the components/com_chronocontact and administrator/components/com_chronocontact folders and then the folders themselves.

Deleted the entire folders - Done.

Use PHPMyadMin to drop any jos_chrono . . . tables from the database.

No tables in the databse to dalete so let's call that bit Done.

Try re-installing again - the extension installer is big and you might be better of doing a manual installation, there are instructions here and in the Joomla help.

By this, do you mean by FTPing the unzipped folder into tmp and then running it via Joomla admin? Perhaps a silly question but just checking so I get it done right.

Following on. I uploaded the files from "Chronoforms V3.1 RC4.0" to my installation folder 'tmp'.
Ran the installer from Joomla Admin and got the dreaded 'Internal Server Error'.
Tried again and got:
Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/home/fhlinux137/s/spirewindows.com/user/htdocs/components/com_chronocontact"
Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/home/fhlinux137/s/spirewindows.com/user/htdocs/administrator/components/com_chronocontact"

When I now go to Extension Manager, the component is not listed, however it did create the folders.

I know my host is not the most Joomla friendly host however it does tick all the boxes for Joomla requirements and I've no problems running Joomla or any components that I do manage to install.

The main thing that I can't understand is why I managed to install ChronoForms 3.0 Stable and it worked, but since trying 3.1 RC3 & RC4, it will no longer work at all and come Monday morning I'm going to have some explaining to do.

And another update.
I cleared out the folders again and reinstalled 3.0 Stable.
Although I had 2 attempts to complete the install, it works again.
I am happy to use 3.0 and rate ChronoForms over all the other Joomla Forms Components I've tried (even a couple that I've paid for) but really do want to run the forms in a module. Is there a 'step by step' guide to setting up a form in a module?

I tried to fathom out "mod_placehere_v122" but it's way over my head. I've got 'mod_placehere' installed and went into Module Manager, then New, then selected Place Here, next and then I lost the plot. Title, okay, I'll call it the same as the form name, I can choose my Position etc., but the module parametres... Type options are Article, Category or Section - the options don't include 'ChronoForm' or 'Form'... and my Form is not in an Article. If someone could help me to understand this bit I'd leave 3.0 Stable running and leave 3.1 for more Joomla friendly servers.

Thanks

Please help before I finally lose it with Joomla altogether.

Why on earth does it all have to be so complicated I will never know.

I'm looking at your FAQ number 43, which states:

1. You need to have ChronoForms installed and working.
2. Download, install and publish the ChronoForms mambot
3. Download and install an instance of the Content Item Module-NB the latest version is called 'Place Here'
4. Create and test your form in ChronoForms.
5. Enable mambots/plugins in the Content Item Module configuration.
6. Create a new Joomla content page with the code {chronocontact}my_form_name{/chronocontact}
7. Post the content page to the Content Item Module.

Number 1. Done
Number 2. Done - even though I've no idea what a 'mambot' is.
Number 3. Done
Number 4. Done
Number 5 - assuming you mean tick the radio button to 'Run Plugins' in placehere - done.
Number 6. Done but when I preview it, all I see is
TEST FORM
{chronocontact}TEST{/chronocontact}
(TEST is the name of my form)
Number 7 - assuming you mean put the article ID from step 6 into the ID box in placehere - done.
When I view my site all I see in the position where the form should be is:
TEST FORM
{chronocontact}TEST{/chronocontact}

Oh, and I also tried to drop {chronocontact}TEST{/chronocontact} into another article and on that page I only get the same results as above.

It's Sunday - and before I throw my nice wireless use across thr woom and pull out the remaining bit of hair, I'm going to turn off my computer and go to the pub - actually that's a bit pointless 'cos I don't drink. Oh well. I'll go an have a nice cup of tea.

Hi starfly,

That FAQ is a bit out of date now. ChronoForms now has its own module (availalbe in the Downloads area) and you don't need either the PlugIn or the PlaceHere module to use it.

Sorry, I've made a note to update it.

Thanks Bob
I'm sorted now - it seems.

That FAQ is a bit out of date now. ChronoForms now has its own module (availalbe in the Downloads area) and you don't need either the PlugIn or the PlaceHere module to use it.

I wish I'd figured that out a couple of days ago. I'd have a bit of hair left.

Because of the FAQ I assumed the module only worked with 3.1 RC2,3 & 4 and that 3.0 needed the third party module.

Oh well. I'm happy now and my $25 will be on it's way shortly - I think I'll get approval now.

Cheers.

Martin
