How to upgrade from 2.5 J1.5 RC2 to 3.0?

trunky 18 Dec, 2008
Hi,

how I can upgrade my existing and heavy used (around 50 forms) ChronoForms 2.5 J1.5 RC2 to the 3.0 without losing my data? I did a form backup of all the forms already, but I am unsure how to proceed. In the 3.0 package is written that it is only for updating from beta 1 or 2. But how I can update from 2.5?

Please help me out!

Hi trunky,

Bad news - there's no automatic upgrade :-(

Good news - it's not too bad to do it by hand ;-) I've done quite a few new and the forms take less than a minute each if they are fairly straightforward. I'm not sure about the data - I don''t think that the table structure changed but Max can confirm.

I'd back everything up, then take Backup copies of the forms in cfbak format.

Create a basic form in CF v3 with a basic email configuration. Create a new copy of the form and re-name it. Open the matching cfbak in a text editor and copy and paste the info over - the cfbak format looks complex but really it's just the code chinks with some dividers and easy to read once you get familiar with it.

Save the form, create another copy and start over. Repeat as required with frequent breaks.

So if I understand you correctly, I have to rebuild all the forms by hand?

Ouch... thats a lot of work... and customers can't use the forms meanwhile😟

It is dangerous to have 2.5 running? Then I don't upgrade... but have a problem with 2.5, captcha doesn't work... but this is another topic I think.

Hi Trunky,

that's not too hard to do, you can copy the form in about 7 minutes with revising that everything is ok!🙂

Hi,
I am pondering the same problem. Is there a FAQ that deals with updating to 3.0? Or another forum question?
My main question is:
How do I update 2.5 J1.5 RC3 to 3.0? Uninstall/new installation or copy specific files?

Hi Mats,

No FAQ, many forum answers.
• Backup the database;
  • From the forms manager take backup copies of each of your forms
  • Unistall the old version
  • Install the new version
  • If your forms use emails create a simple template form with a basic email setup
  • Take a copy of the template form, open it up, open the corresponding /cfbak file in a text edito and copy and paste the form elements over.
  • Save and test
  • Repeat for each form
  • Restore any form database tables if necessary (but they should be OK)
  •
That's it, there is no automatic system. This sounds bad but actually doesn't take long - 5-10 minute a form (maybe less) once you get the hang of it.

I didn't upgraded yet... 5-10 minutes each by 60 forms... that will take a while.

Is there any good (security) reason to update?

    Hi trunky,

No security reasons that I know of (except for the switch to Joomla 1.5.x) - more functionality for new forms, nothing very different for existing forms.

In fact, there's a problem when using version 2.5: creation of datatables. I was adviced by admin at your forum to update to 3.0 in order to get this function to work. See the thread http://www.chronoengine.com/forums.html?cont=posts&f=2&t=12203&p=21145#p21145. I tried this on a web site that holds only one form and everything worked after the update.

It is really akward to update each form if you have lots of forms on your webpages. I suggest you adress this problem in your next update.

    Hi Mats,

Once you know how to convert 1 form then it should not take more than 5 minutes to convert forms between the 2 versions!

    Cheers,
