Support for unicode/Chinese characters

alexge 15 Oct, 2008
Does ChronoForms support unicode/Chinese characters? I have installed it. But in the wizard, when I tried to copy over some Chinese charaters from word/excel file, it changes everything into question mark after I save the form. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi alexge, open the form for editing, go to the form code tab and the HTML code box, insert some Chinese characters there and save the form and open it, does it show also as question marks ? if so then this is a DB/PHP problem at your side, Chronoforms should save data in UTF-8 fine.

Cheers,

Hi Max,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm currently using a character conversion tool to convert the Chinese characters to Unicode before inserting into the form using the form wizard. It works, but it's very troublesome.

Doesn't matter whether I'm using the Wizard, form code or HTML code, once I click Save, all Chinese characters come out as question marks.

I doubt it's my DB/PHP issue, as I'm able to save and retrieve Chinese characters under Joomla articles.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hi alexge,

ok, I'm sure this is depending on some setting in your server because I saw Japanese forms before done with CF but lets try something, try to go to joomla global config and enable GZip compression, now save, go to the forms page again, try to open the form, edit it and save, does this process works as if GZip is disabled ?

hi max,

thanks again for your reply. i enabled gzip and encountered a bigger problem. I couldn't access any part of the Chrono form's module from the administrator section. the error message is:

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

Ok, then the 2 problems may be related, disable it again so it works fine, I will try to fix this issue in the new release.

Best regards,

This is pretty critical, as I use chronoforms on some sites that can really benefit from gzipping... it's pretty much standard for any Joomla setup these days. Thanks for listening and continuing to improve chronoforms.
