Every time any form of the site is triggered from a link I get a grey code page overlayed at the end of which I can see the chronoform which is supposed to be shown.

Most probably you have some assets (javascript or css) minifying plugin which tries to minify the js/css code of the page but fails, which breaks the page

Try to check your system plugins for that and then disable it ?
