Update error: Unable to open archive

twhite 23 Jul, 2016
I am on Joomla 3.5.1, and in Update manager, I click to update Chronoforms V5.0.11 to V5.0.12.

Then I get response:

Error
Unable to open archive
Warning
Update path does not exist.
Message
Error updating COM_INSTALLER_TYPE_TYPE_.
Notice
Before updating ensure that the update is compatible with your Joomla! installation.

When checking out the file on the server which was downloaded for the update, I noticed the MD5 sum is different than if I just download the file directly from Chronoengines.com.

/tmp]# md5sum Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip
0687f5b038cdf6640586f9c30e349db7 Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip

Following is a direct download:

~/Downloads$ md5 Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip
MD5 (Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip) = 6785c56de12842c9fd34a83e702a427e

If I upload the 2nd file to server (ending in 427e sum) and unzip in tmp sub-folder, I can install with no problems.

If I try to unzip the file that Joomla updater downloads, I get the following:

unzip Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip
Archive: Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip or
Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip.zip, and cannot find Chronoforms_V5.0.12_Component.zip.ZIP, period.

I removed this file and tried the download again with joomla updater and on second try get same errors without install.
Please check your zip file MD5 sums and see if you have same issue.
thanks,
Tom

Also, please note files are same size.

Hi twhite,

I just tried the Joomla! Updater for ChronoForums and see the same COM_INSTALLER_TYPE_TYPE_ error message.

Using the Upload and Install Joomla Extension method worked for me for ChronoForms, ChronoConnectivity and ChronoForums.

I expect that Max will soon update the MD5 records - or whatever else is needed.

Hi Bob,

Md5 sum is a checksum to tell the validity or checksum signature of a file. Even though the files from the two sources have the same size, they have different content. Specifically the one from Joomla updater dowload does not unzip indicating it is corrupt or has been tampered with. Hope that helps.

Hi Tom,

Yes, I understand what the MD5 checksum is - my guess is that Max needs to update that somewhere to match the new version file.

If you need to upgrade ChronoForms then then a 'standard' upload and install works OK.

I have the same issue with the update extension.
Kind regards, Jip.

Hi Jip,

I have no idea where in the Joomla! system the MD5 code for the Automatic upgrades is stored (I have tried searching but with no success). Presumably Max does know and can update it.

As I said earlier, I have had no problem downloading the file from here and using Upload and Install in my site Extension Manager.

Hi Polleke,

Can you upgrade by downloading the file here and using the 'Upload and Install' option in Joomla!?
