Date Picker Error - retuns a string rather than date

Hello, I have CF4 with Date Input for DOB and it worked fine in Joomla v2.5, but when I upgraded to Joomla v3.5, the Date Picker returns the format string ("d/m/Y") rather then the selected date ("5/5/2016") - see attached.
This is really annoying to the users with missing essential data for user registration. Please can someone help fix this problem?

The default CFv4 datepicker works OK in Joomla 3.5.1 when I test (apart from some CSS problems from the template).

How are you setting the format string - that isn't a setting in the datepicker element?
