Populate a form from database based on user input and clicking a button

I have to admit, I'm no expert (read novice) when it comes to Chronoforms, and even less of an expert when it comes to databases, but I've been looking at a number of the posts, and it looks like it's probably possible to do what I want with Chronoforms, but HOW is a different question all together.

I have a booking form that a user would fill in, but when they have already made an enquiry (on a separate form) I want to be able to populate the booking form with info from their enquiry if they enter their enquiry reference. The way I wanted it to work is, on the booking form, I was going to have a text box where the user could enter their reference and then click a button to update the form. This would then perform a lookup on the database against the reference number, and pull the information from the table holding the enquiry data into the booking form. I've seen examples where data is pulled in based on the user clicking a submit button, but I want to update the form before the user fills out the rest of the info on the form, then they would submit at the end.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated, along with links to any posts that would help.

Many thanks,

Rob.
