ChronoForms not anymore on Extensions.joomla.org !

PGe 28 May, 2012
I was rather surprised to see that ChronoForms is unpublished on the Joomla community portal
Any background info would be appreciated ... what are the plans for the future ...
I really feel uncomfortable, and looking for alternatives...

Hi Pge,

I don't know what is happening. I had heard of the un-listing yesterday from someone else. The JED team can sometimes be a bit whimsical with their rules. ChronoForms was unlisted one before for a month or two while Max negotiated some changes (which had no effect on the extension coding).

As far as I can see the UR12-Violation reads

UR12-General Guideline Violation (See Notes)

Some guideline violations require unpublishing of listings and/or temporary or permanent suspensions. Please see the notes attached to the listing for more details.

but there are no Notes attached to the listing - just a link to the Violations list.

ChronoForms does use encoding for a few lines of code but as far as I can see they are in compliance with the terms in List C2.3 Items 8 & 9 here which allow encoding "Only for the file required to verification of support license; Base64 only".

More news when there is some.

Bob, thank you for the reply, although it does not increase my level of confidence. If there were discussions before, probably there will be a good reason why the JED team unlisted ChronoForms again.
I hope the chronoengine team can overcome this dispute sooner then later.
For the moment I'm reluctant to use ChronoForms ... what is obfuscated makes me be vigilant.

Hi PGe,

Today happens to be the fifth anniversary of me signing up here. Nothing significant - in terms of obfuscation and encryption - has changed in ChronoForms for at least the last two of those years. The extension is just as safe (or not) as it was last week and last year.

I have no absulutely no information about what has happened with JED so anything I write is pure speculation. I can think of three possible stories . . .

a) Someone installed ChronoForms, tripped over the obfuscated code (it will trip some virus scanners), complained to JED and someone on the JED team unlisted it without checking the facts.

b) Someone from another Forms extension complained in a similar way.

c) Something completely different happened.

Bob

PS The previous discussions were nothing to do with the code itself but about the exact wording of the subscription offer.

Bob, congratulations with your 5 year of presence.
Your prompt and open answer please me and as such are a good sign.
As I'm rather novice with webbuilding apps and CMS sytems, the technicality behind the reasons for unlisting from JED are a bit beyond my scope...
Good luck with sorting this issue positively

While I applaud the Joomla admins for keeping an eye on the content in the Extension Directory, banning an app without advanced notice or even explanation is inexcusable.

I have been using ChronoForms for year without a problem (or at least without a problem that Bob has not been able to fix quickly.)

Thanks for all of the support!

I've heard a little bit more - but not for a few weeks now. And I need to correct my earlier post.

First off, I understand that the JED is being incredibly slow in replying to Max's email - it took four weeks for them to reply to his email asking why they had delisted ChronoForms and I don't think that anything has speeded up over the summer. The JED is staffed by volunteers but even so this seems to be an incredibly slow response.

In correction to my earlier post where I said that ChronoForms uses encryption I was technically wrong and have corrected the post. ChronoForms uses encoding in a couple of places. The difference is that encryption is not reversible by a user, whereas encoding is, there are PHP functions and public websites where encoded PHP can easily be decoded if you want to know what is in it.

I understand that as well as the encoding they have some concerns about the strap-line that is added in the free version of ChronoForms - I'm not sure exactly what these concerns are though.

I believe that Max has offered to make appropriate changes and is waiting for a reply from the JED staff to know if these meet their needs.

As far as I know there is nothing about the functionality of ChronoForms involved here - they are pretty minor concerns related to exact compliance with the words of the GPL licence. From my point of view it looks like an exercise in slow-motion hair splitting.
