How Does The Database Works?

Can someone give me a brief explanation or refer me to a document or post that explains how the database works or what it's used for. I've never used it and I may be missing out on not using it.

I didn't see anything that explains its use.

I guess in the case of chronoforms, how can we use the data that is stored? Is there a way to download the data, save the data so users can access it again, etc....
