Security of Data in Emails

lindaneale 23 Jun, 2011
Hi
I'm setting up several forms on Joomla 1.6 using your v4 Chronoforms. Some of the data we will be collecting is personal data like names and dates of birth etc (no credit card info) but I'm still a bit concerned about the security of the data when it's submitted via email, especially in terms of identity theft. Is there any way to make this data transmission via email as secure as possible? Do I need to install an SSL certificate? If so is the data still emailed or do we have to look in the database to extract it? Sorry for the dumb questions but never had to worry about this before.

Any other advice you can offer would be most welcome.
Many thanks
Linda

Hi Lauren,

SSL won't protect the Email at all - only the connection between the browser and the server.

Do you actually need to email the data? You could send an email that just contains a link to view the data on the site.

Alternatively it may be possible to encrypt the Email using PGP or something similar. There is a thread here discussing that but it's outside my experience and I'm not sure that any good solution was found.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to set chronoforms up to tell you when data has been entered and put into the database without submitting via email?
Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda,

Well, you can edit the Email template so that it just says 'A new form has been submitted - please go take a look.'
