Creating form to query database

brentlac 18 May, 2011
I am new to Joomla and was wondering if the following is possible, and if so what steps/tools would be required.

In a module I want to have a form that generates the parameters to query a database. After submitting I would like the parameters to remain in the form for reference, and the content portion of the page to display a table with the results of the query

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi brentlac,

That's a fairly good description of ChronoConnectivity. Unfortunately there is no module support for ChronoConnectivity though it may be possible to run it in a 'wrapper' module.

You could to it with a form but it would take more work.

Which version of Joomla! are you using?

I'm using 1.5 currently, although since I am currently building the web site I could change to 1.6 if that would make it easier to complete.

Thanks

Hi Brent,

ChronoConnectivity doesn't exist for Jooaml 1.6 yet - though you can create similar results with ChronoForms v4 with a bit of work.

If you are just starting out then I'd certainly consider switching to Joomla! 1.6 now - it's easier to start out fresh than to migrate later. The show-stopper would be if there are components you need tha don't exist for Joomla! 1.6.

Well that is sort of my problem, I'm not sure what I need or if Joomla is actually suited for the application I'm trying to run. I am in the beginning stage so moving from 1.5 to 1.6 is not a problem although the chronoforms interface is easier in 1.5 than in 1.6 (in my opinion).

I am trying to setup an internal knowledge base. It would consist of several sections, closed work orders, manuals, technical publications, inventory, contacts, and more. Each section will probably contain hundreds if not thousands of articles. I will need to have a form for each section that will generate a database query and then have the query display the results in the content area of the website. I do not want to create an Joomla article for each article, rather create one article and have it populated with the document(s) that meet the database query.

Any opinions would be helpful. If you feel this is an application that Joomla could handle please let me know if any extensions would be needed as well.

Thanks
Brent

Hi brent,

This is a fairly typical CMS application and could certainly be built in Joomla! (or in several other CMSs).

If you use Joomla! then a combination of ChronoForms - to enter, edit and display single records; and ChronoConnectivity* - to select, filter, and display lists of records; would certainly be a viable approach. You'd need some PHP, Joomla!, MySQL and possibly JavaScript knowledge to get it working.

There has been at least one similar large-scale project that I know of - to provide access to some Italian legal archives.

* ChronoConnectivity doesn't currently exist for Joomla! 1.6 but will hopefully be released before too long.
