Datepicker validation problem

I have a problem where if I click onto or tab key to the field that is using the datepicker, the datepicker will show ok, I select a date, the date is inserted in the field ok, but I get the validation error message come up saying "this field is required". I then need to click back into the field to clear the message. On Submit, if the message is still up the form will still process OK.
As you can see users may think that they have selected an incorrect value into the field.
Is there a way around this problem, or have I configured something incorrectly?
