Dynamic email address

thesaltydog 30 Mar, 2011
In previous version of Chronoform I was used to put a dynamic email address (into curly brackets) into the email settings, so that it came up that I was receiving the form email as arriving from the user.

Now in v.4 it looks like I am compelled to put a static email address in the "To" field... How can I let chronoform emailing acting as before?

Hi,

You can still enter your email field name in the "Dynamic from email" field under the "Dynamic" tab or in the "Dynamic Reply To Email"

Yez, I did it. But the mail is always arriving from the "static To:" email address. If I leave blank the Static To: field, the mail arrives from <unknown sender>, even if I have entered the dynamic address. This is different from previous version.
Max_admin 31 Mar, 2011
Hi,

Well, the "Static To" will never affect the "from address", I think you mean the "Static from email" ? this is how it works, if there is a "static from email" then it will be used, if not then the dynamic from email will be used, if there is no dynamic one then it will be "unknown sender".

You may show us a screenshot if there is any misunderstanding.

Yes, I intended "Static From:".

My static from email and name fields are blank. Then I have put the variables name into dynamic_from and dynamic_from_email, but the mail is arriving fromn "unkown sender"... I have tried writing the variable with and without curly brackets.

How can I show you the screenshot of this behaviour?

Hi fabio,

I strongly recommend that you do *not* use the Dynamic From Email element in your Email Setups. Using this often results in your emails being marked as spam and dropped into a spam filter. Instead use the static From Email with an address that matches the site domain name and use Dynamic ReplyTo Email for the user email. The result is the same but with a much better chance of good delivery.

No quotes or brackets are required for the email setup boxes.

Hi Bob,

there is something boken in that module...

I have entered a correct Static From name and email address. Then I have entered form fields (without brackets) in Dynamics Reply to name and email, but I am still receiving emails from "unknown sender"!

Bob,

I have seen that changes in the form template are not sent to the site. Is there any cache I have to delete (the site has no cache, and I gave deleted the browser cache).
thesaltydog 31 Mar, 2011
I have changed the static to address, but the form keeps sending emails to the old one. If I reopen the template, the old address is still there! I have (of course) pressed on Apply.

Try this:

1 - open the email wizard template
2 - change the Static To: address to a new one
3 - click on apply
4 - change to something else (i.e. Article Contents)
5 - go back to Chronoforms form.
6 - open the same email template as before
7 - the "old" email address is still there!

Hi Fabio,

I just ran a test with CFv4 RC1.7 in Joomla! 1.5 and everything appears to work perfectly :-(

Bob,

I believe you for sure. But I am trying to guess what is happening to my Chronoforms...

I tried again right now. No way to change any vakue into the email template. Whenever I switch to another window and come back into chronoforms, all the old values are there again!

Hi Fabio,

By all means email or PM me the site URL and a SuperAdmin login and I'll take a quick look.

I had a similar problem this afternoon on another site. I could get a new form to save but not an existing one. I think in that case that there was some faulty code in the original form - but I have no idea why I couldn't overwrite it. That's one for Max I think.

Hi Fabio,

I have made a copy of your form and edited it. Emails are sending OK.

Here are the changes I remember:[list=a]
  • I switched to the Advanced Wizard so that I can . . .
  • . . . add a Debugger Action

  • Added Static From Name & From Email entries

  • Switched the Dynamic From entries to Dynamic ReplyTo and removed the {} brackets

  • Changed the label from #1 to Email 1 (I suspect that the #1 label may somehow prevent saving the changes)

  • Added my address to the Static To entry for testing
  • [/list:o]

    Hi Fabio,

2 - change the Static To: address to a new one
    3 - click on apply
4 - change to something else (i.e. Article Contents)

at #3, which Apply did you click ? I would do #3 in 3 steps:

#1- click the apply button of the popup box (the light box)
    #2- close the popup box.
#3- click the apply of the main window between the "save" and "cancel" buttons.

Is this what you are doing ?

    Bob,

yes I have received the email too!

    Thank you very much!

No... I was just clicking on the "Apply" of the popup box. Forgetting the other one.
But, may I tell you that this can be a very common mistake? When I have pressed an "Apply" button I am not expected to press another one.

    Thank you.

    Hi Max,

There is a problem with the double 'apply'; I've failed that test a few times but am learning to double check.

There's also some other bug with saving emails that I've hit a few times in the last couple of days. This isn't about the double 'apply'. I have carefully checked that I've done both yet when I go back the data hasn't saved. As I said in my earlier post I'm suspicious about the #1 label in the Easy Wizard. I have no good evidence but it seems that if I change that to something else like 'Email 1' then the change sticks.

    Hi Bob, Fabio,

I agree the double "apply" may cause troubles, but I can't think of something else, they are 2 different things, we apply for the field settings first then for the whole form, any ideas ?

I'm not sure about the email label as well, I will continue testing, but if it doesn't cause problems all the time on the same machine then it's not the "#", if you spot anything else then please let me know.
