Does anybody know if there is a way to display an article without that article having to link to a menu item?

There are two situations that have come up for me where I need this functionality:

-For example I want to have a section blog layout but the article titles in my layout aren't linkable unless there is a menu item that links to that article.

-Another situation is that I want to link to an article by creating a link within another article, but I don't want to have a menu item for the article being linked to.

I have downloaded 'linkr' extension (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/4010/details) which I find very helpful to creating links to anywhere.

You can use links to 'hidden' menus that aren't published anywhere.
