I'm about at my wits end trying to setup smtp mail. I have the account working fine in Outlook so I know my settings are correct.

Mailer: smtp mailer
Mail from: [email]myname@mydomain.com[/email]
From Name: myname
Sendmail Path: /usr/sbin/sendmail (n/a for smtp)
SMTP Authentication: Yes
SMTP Username: [email]myname@mydomain.com[/email]
SMTP Password *****
SMTP Host: smtp.1and1.com

I get "SMTP Error! Data not accepted."
I have also tried the alternate port for 1and1, smtp.1and1.com:587, In that case I get 'unable to connect to smtp server.' when trying to send mail under 'mass mail' in the admin. Same issue with chronoforms.

The email address that I am using to send exists, it's the same domain as my Joomla installation. I've tried changing the admin contact email addy to match & I've tried changing the PW for the email account. The domain exists in a subfolder of my hosting but the same issue happens if I setup my top level Joomla install for smtp.

I'd like to use smtp to avoid being sent to the spam folder. PHP mail & sendmail seem to work intermittently in any case. I've considered using Gmail's smtp (tho that seems to need mods as well) but am concerned that mailings will be sent to the spam folder.

I have contacted 1and1 and of course they said they dont support 3rd party apps, they did say they would 'research' it but I haven't heard back.

Any ideas for me?

are you trying to send from your email to your email ? the same email ? if so then this may be a problem!

if your email goes to SPAM then it may be removed soon, the mail servers have some techniques to fix this!

It happens when I go to 'mass mail' to test the mail settings, or if I submit a form. It's not accepting my login information for the smtp server. The same info works in Outlook tho. I have changed the admin emails to same and otherwise but it doesn't affect it, It never gets as far as sending. Tho I may be able to get CF to work with PHPmail I need to use smtp because of other plugins.

I'm not sure what is happening but my feeling is that 1and1 is not allowing Joomla access to their smtp server for some reason...?

Hi, I have no idea, try to google "smtp" "joomla" "1and1", or ask at the Joomla forums because the problem is with the whole Joomla system now and there are many who should have tried 1and1, I didn't try them before except once when I did some website for a client loooong time ago!🙂

Thanx anyways Max. I have posted in other forums but no one has been able to help. If anyone has any ideas at all here is some more info:

I've discovered that the smtp mail works intermittently. Maybe 1/5 of the time. If I go to 'mass mail' and keep trying, some will go through. I've tried combinations of checking/unchecking the boxes for 'mail to child groups' etc but it doesn't seem to matter.

Mostly I get "SMTP Error! Data not accepted." From the sound of that I thought it was an authentication issue, but I notice in the phpmailer.lang-en.php there is also an error, 'SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.' So this appears to be something different...?

Help is much appreciated! I've searched everywhere & am out of ideas.
