I've looked but can't find an answer to this: what level of Joomla access does one need in order to use Chronoforms from the adminstrator back end? Both CF5 and CF6.

Whatever access level you want. But a superuser will have to grant your access level access. Go to System -> Global Configuration -> Chronoforms# and set the permissions you want.
