Max, I ran into sort of a peculiar thing yesterday while setting up a news feeds section for New England Sports Blog (http://www.newenglandsportsblog.com). I found that the "Read 0 Comments... >>" link that shows up on articles also showed up in both the main feeds page in the feed category descriptions and also in each of the feed category descriptions in the feed category pages themselves. The comment links produced in them all are...
I searched but couldn't find in info on this oddity here on ChronoEngine. I know not some many folks use the Joomla news feeds component so i figured this could just be one of those little things that slips through the cracks unnoticed for awhile sometimes. So I wanted to bring it up over here to see if you were aware of it and if any others have experienced this as well or if perhaps I have just missed something in the ChronoComments setup that would prevent this.
Currently I have the NESB feeds section restricted to special access while I'm building it but I would be happy to either make it public for awhile or provide you with a special access account if you would like to take a look at what I'm talking about. Of course you can easily check it out here or elsewhere if you prefer.

Hi dayworks, please tell me how can I test this here locally and I will do, I mean the steps you do to make this feeds category.

Max, I don't believe it. Earlier, I posted a rather lengthy reply describing the setup and what I'm seeing. However, the post isn't here and I'm not sure where it went. It's late this evening where I am, but I'll try to get back by tomorrow and essentially replicate that post. For now I would mention though, that this evening I noticed that the comments link is also showing up under the category descriptions of the Contacts component. You can see the comments link under the primary contacts category on NESB here: http://www.newenglandsportsblog.com/contact-us.html . I have noted as well that categories of both the Contacts and Feeds component show up as content categories in the ChronoComments filtering parameters.

Hi Bob,
On that page it looks as though ChronoComments is enabled for the Contacts category, I think that by default it's enabled for everything, you may need to reconfigure.

Hi dayworks,
Ok, let me know after you try Bob's suggestion of omitting those 2 categories from the selections, be careful, at this dropdown you should select all categories except those 2 and remove any sections selections above it!

Max

Nope. I'm not using either the Contacts category or any of the News Feeds categories. I've tried filtering by Section, by Category and by both. None of the methods keep those comment links out of the contact or feed categories. BTW, I'm running Joomla 1.5.7 on this site.
To replicate what I have on NESB the first thing to do is create a feeds category and at least on news feed for it. After that is complete, a menu item to the feeds component. You can also create a sub-menu item for the feeds category if you wish. I recommend this so that you can fully test your menu item parameters for both links as they will be somewhat different from one another. So, here we go...
Go to Components -> Feeds -> Categories - This will take you to the News Feeds Category Manager. Once there, click on the "New" button at the top/right to create a news feed category. Enter some title for the category and write some description text for it as well. Other setting should be fine as they are. Once you've finished your title and description, save the category.
While still in the News Feeds Category Manager, click on the Feeds link to the left of the Categories link. This will take you to the News Feeds Manager. Once there, click the "New" button at the top/right to create a new news feed. Add a name for you your feed, pick a category for it (the new one you created), add the RSS/XML url you wish to use for the feed, set the number of articles to display and the amount of cache time before feeds my be refreshed. When done, save the new feed.
While still in the News Feeds Manager, click the Parameters button at the top/right of the feeds manager to set the component's global configuration. Generally, I set everything there to "Show" except for Feed Image and Feed Description which I set to "Hide". I usually set word count to somewhere between 250 and 450. Once done with the settings, save the configuration.
Now let's create a couple of menu items for the news feeds. The first will be a link to the component itself. Afterward I recommend creating a menu link to the new feeds category as well. Both can be easily created through Joomla 1.5 Internal Links and I'm sure you guys know how to do that. The only thing of particular interest we have with regard to this phenomenon is in the parameter settings of the links.
There's nothing much to talk about there except that in the news feeds component link you create, you will want to choose to "Show" your Description and also enter some Description Text before you save the menu item. In other words, you add the component description to the menu item for it, but the category description through the component's category manager. Otherwise, you can fiddle with other parameters if you wish but I generally allow the global settings to provide the component parameters.
That's really all there is to setting up a basic news feeds page(s) for testing the comments link issue. I look forward to seeing how this resolves. Let me know if there is any other info I may provide or anything else I can help with in the course of seeking discovery and resolution of the issue at hand.

Max, the patch resolves the issue beautifully with the news feeds categories. Thanks so much! I see the contact category descriptions are still showing comments, but I'm sure you are looking into that as well. Again, nice work and I really appreciated the stewardship you exhibit toward your projects. It's a breath of fresh air.
Cheers!

No problems, its attached, I actually missed it!

Hi Max,
I am facing the same problem of comment link showing up in the feed category. I have followed up the instruction as mentioned above. I have replaced the file chronocomments.php file on the server with the one you posted here as well.
The problem is shown here at http://www.nepalijanajati.com/njac/index.php?option=com_newsfeeds&view=category&id=16&Itemid=21
In the Chrono Comments global configuration i have selected the Sections and Categories. I have attached 2 files. The file 1.jpg shows the comment link with Sections and Categories selected where as the 2.jpg does not show the comment link if is select the Sections, Categories and Articles.
thanks,
thulung

Hi thulung,
Have you applied the patch above ? the patch has a code to stop the comments plugin if the page is a newsfeeds component page, please make sure you overwritten the plugins/content/ChronoComments.php file correctly!
