Resolving Browser Differences

RMIGHTY1 26 Jun, 2008
Hello,

This is likely a simple CSS fix, but I have searched the forum and internet for 2 days now and have finally resigned myself to ask for help.

The component section displays fine with IE7 but is about 25px to the right overlapping the right component border in FF2.0.

I have tried three different CSS solutions for browser hacks but I am still in the CSS learning stage and have been unable to accomplish this task. The form is a long complex one. It shows up fine in a normal webpage but has this quirk in chronoform. I have used Expression Web to develop the form. I read something about "nested" forms causing problems. How do I know if my forms are "nested?" How can I get the FF2.0 display and the IE7 display to both be centered in the component section? Any ideas? Please be specific.

Thank you,

Hi Ray,

I've absolutely no idea - many things could cause this. Is the page on-line, I might be able to see something.

Hello Bob,

OK, great! It has been immune to everything I try, so far. Here is link: http://ezwebstart.biz/show/index.php?option=com_chronocontact&Itemid=66

You should see that it displays well with deffault settings in IE7 but shifts about 25px to the right in FF2.0. Again, if they are published simply as web pages, they display correctly. It is only in chronoforms that this behavior is displayed.

When I construct webpages in Expression Web, I do so that they appear well in FF, then adjust any boo boo's in IE. It is strange that it is the IE browser that is looking good in chronoform and the FF that is out of whack. Of course, I can shift FF 25 px to the left but then IE will be off 25 px to the left in the component section of Joomla using chronoform. Perhaps it is some feature in expression web having this influence.

BTW, the chronoform website has been painstakingly slow. Perhaps it is just for me. Thought you might want to know.

Thank you Bob.

Have a great day kind sir!

Hi Ray,

Sorry, I didn't spot anything obvious. I'm using FF3 and the alignment looks OK but the left colum is forced down below the main body. There's something very weird about the comtext class as that floats right out to the right.

Looks like a pick right through carefully job.

There's very little styling or layout built into ChronoForms so it doesn't usually cause any layout problems.

Thank you Bob for taking a peek.

I d/l FF3 and took a look. The left column as you said has fallen below the center column. Sheesh, another browser for which to fix boo boo's. I did not see the comtext class out to the right though while using both 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions in FF3 or otherwise.

Thanks also for the info on chronoforms not having layout influence. That narrows down my search. I am stumped why FF2 and FF3 appear different. Sheeesh!

I will keep at it and be sure to let you know if I find a solution.

Hello,

Have made some progress. Have learned the problem is not in expression web, chronoforms, or Joomla! It is in the template I have been using. I switched templates to another by the same author and the form shows up well in both IE7 and FF3 (except for the left column displaying below the main column).

So, at least now the search area has been significantly narrowed. Next time I sit down with this issue, I will compare the css of the two templates. That should reveal something.

Cheers!
