ChronoForums: Email notification not working

mleimgru 15 Jan, 2014
Hello,
I have installed ChronoForums and it is working like a charm, beautiful! The only problem I have is that the email notifications are not working at all. I have completely configured the "Notifications" tab in the Board Settings, everything on "Yes", sender email set to the site's default, etc... But neither "New post" nor "New reply" do trigger an email.
The rest of the site handles email notifications correctly (e.g. JComments, new article notifications, private messages, etc...). I run Joomla 3.1.5 and "PHP Mail".
Any ideas where I could start?
Thank you very much, Maurice

Answer
Hi Maurice,

The emails should be sent fine, did you enter a from name and email in the settings ? please check your spam filter!

Max

Hi Max

Spam was the right answer, sorry for bothering with such a trivial case...

Thank you & Kind Regards, Maurice

Hi,

I am not receiving emails either and on submit a 500 script error comes up. My other emails for the site work fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Simon

Hi Max,

I have copied the exact details from my site settings (originally I put in a different name) and now it does not show a 500 script error. However, I am still not receiving notifications so is there anything else I need to do?

Many thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Maybe you should check the spam filter, if the emails are not there then please check the emails log on your server to check if they were sent or not!

Hi Max,

I'm not sure how to check the emails log on the server. My mass email system is working fine. I use Freeola as my host provider but there is nothing about setting up mail on a Joomla system on Freeola. I have played with PHP, sendmail and SMTP in my site server settings but still no emails coming through. I am using the very latest version of Joomla.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Do you receive other emails from your Joomla website ? if yes then what's the mailing method enabled in your Joomla global config ?

Max

Hi Max,

Please find below my configured settings - the only one that works without known errors is SMTP:

Sendmail Yes
Mailer *SMTP

From email: axxxx@derbymetaldetecting.co.uk

From Name: Derby Artefacts Recovery Club

SMTP Authentication: No
SMTP Security: None

SMTP Port *25

SMTP Username: xxxxxxxxx

SMTP Password:xxxxxxxx

SMTP Host: localhost

Simon

Hi Simon,

Chronoforums doesn't use the Joomla mailer and doesn't use the SMTP feature, so your PHP mailer should be working, I will try to add SMTP option to the next version!

Hi Max,

Once again, thanks for your reply - I appreciate your support.

I have tried the PHP mail but the system cannot instantiate mail function

I will just have to check the forums regularly for new posts and ask all my members to do the same as they do not receive updates either.

Chronoforums is a great component - keep up the good work.

Thanks,

Simon

But it is not possible to ask your host admin to configure the php mail for you ? just tell them that it doesn't work!

Also please check for the new version hopefully in the next 2 days, I will try to add the SMTP for you!

Max
