Checkbox values in email template

Sorry probably simple question, but my brain doesn't work today.

How to I get the value of checkboxes to appear in the email template.

I have put fields like {tendering} with initial value of "Personal Guide to Tendering"

But in the email I get 1 when checked and just {tendering] when unchecked.

Thanks Bob for providing a quick solution, I want to note that V4 RC2.0 has a new ghost feature for checkboxes elements so that they should always provide a default value even when unchecked, this feature can be enabled or disabled per element based on the user's needs🙂
