Extending registration forms?

sydd 22 Nov, 2010
Hi

First thanks for this app, i like it a lot so far. Im using it to create a registration page, with some extra fields. I have followed the registration form tutorial, but i need to do a bit more, i have two questions:

1. If i add extra fields to the registration form how can i store them in the database? I guess i need to add new columns to the Joomla user table?

2. How can i get these new fields in the "my-settings" page? I want that the users can change the fields later too, not just on registration.

Thanks for help

Anyone? These seem to be quite common problems to me..

Hi sydd ,

It is a common problem and the solution takes a bit of explaining. I set out to write it up as a tutorial today. unfortunately life got in the way and I got no further than opening my editor. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Bob

PS You don't want to add extra columns to jos users but use a separate table for the extra data.

Hi sydd,

It's more than half-written but got side-lined by some mild chaos in other parts of my life. Hopefully a quieter few days coming up now and I'll get it finished as soon as I can.

Hi Sydd,

This document is now posted here. It's quite long but I have had it all working. It shows you:
• How to create a simple registration form with two extra inputs and to save the results either in an extra table or as a new parameter in the jos_users table. (You can of course use the same methods to save more fields.)
 • How to recall the data into a second form so that it can be edited.
 •
This took quite a lot of effort to put together so there is a fee for the download. If you enter the coupon 5J2RMg66NL at the checkout then the first four buyers will get $7.50 off the $12.50 cost.
