Captcha image missing

Thrushwood 23 Mar, 2009
I have a form I want to add captcha to but the captcha image is missing on the admin section - sample image under Anti Spam tab - and does not display on the actual form either. I have tried adding captcha to a form on another site and the image is displaying OK. The site isn't using https so that is not an issue like on another recent forum thread. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Thrushwood,

What do the diagnostics on the Anti-spam tab say, please?

Hi GreyHead,

I am not sure what you mean by diagnostics but I am attaching a screenshot of the Anti Spam tab page taken in IE with properties of the missing image - Firefox simply shows nothing against the sample image.

Hi Thrushwood,

Thanks, it was the left hand bit I wanted. Have you tried 'without fonts' ?

Bob

Hi Bob,

I've checked it again and it's the same "without fonts" - on the form the input box appears but with no captcha image - and the same on the admin side - no sample image as before.

Hi Thrushwood,

Almost certainly a permissions problem - the image link gives this message

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email]webmaster@maintenanceconsultants.co.uk[/email] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.41 Server at maintenanceconsultants.co.uk Port 80

Please check with your ISP that the Joomla user has read-write access and that the image file-type is recognised.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the help - I will try the ISP and see what they say.

I'm having this same problem. Can you tell me what folder the image gets written to and what the image type is?
Max_admin 26 Mar, 2009
Hi cspears1077,

the image is created dynamically, you can test it using this link :

http://www.domain.com/components/com_chronocontact/chrono_verification.php

As I figured, my host wasn't much of a help. They just told me to adjust the permission myself in the control panel. So, do I give write access to group and world to the components/com_chronocontact folder?
Max_admin 27 Mar, 2009
hi, there has been the same problem here recently and I asked the user which permissions he changed to get it to work, I can't remember the exact values, but it was not writable for the world and of course this is strongly not safe to do! start by searching the forums for "captcha 755 644" or so!

let me know!

I am having the same issue...no captcha image is shown on the form. I performed the fourm search recommeded in a previous thread but to no avail. I also tried to veryify the form using the url provided in a previous thread and received this error message:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email]webmaster@domain.com[/email] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

-----------

When I look at my server logs I see these two entries:

[Thu Apr 02 22:04:12 2009] [error] [client 70.143.44.74] File does not exist: /home/domain/public_html/500.shtml
[Thu Apr 02 22:04:12 2009] [error] [client 70.143.44.74] SoftException in Application.cpp:544: Directory "/home/domain/public_html/components" is writeable by group

Obviously I have substituted "domain" in the above text for my domain name. Thanks in advance for any advice.

hi,
i am also having the same issue - no captcha image shown on form or on the administrative end. I have read and tried all recommendations in previous threads but still can't get the captcha image to show.

hoping for some help on this. Thanks!

Hi ablaze and adelecheah,

The first place to go is to talk to your hosting provider. This is almost always a problem with folder permissions.

I have contacted my host. Set the folder permissions to their suggesstions, and it still is not working. Also posting this question with my host (Rochen). I will post the fix for the rest of those seeking this answer. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Ct,

it depends on the file permissions and the folder permissions, whats the file permissions and the com_chronocontact folder permissions ? try to set the file perms to 644 or 755 ?

in the new version we have a new reCaptcha plugin, you may try this instead!

Hi soamz,

Could this be linked to your sub-directory problem?

What's the link to the form?

Have you tried the debug tests from the FAQs?
