SMTP connect() failed.

jedlad 07 Apr, 2016
I'm using Chronoforms v4 on my Joomla website and the forms have worked successfully for almost three years.

Since the upgrade to Joomla 3.5.0 I have been getting the following error when a form is submitted

SMTP connect() failed.

The database is being updated - it is the e-mail that is failing. I have been using the e-mail facility as a back-up should the database ever fail. Every time someone updates the database (in my case that means someone has entered a golf competition) I get an e-mail showing all the details

As the database is being updated, the e-mail fault is not the end of the world. I'd rather not revert to Joomla 3.4.8 if I don't have to as I have updated quite a lot of articles since my last 3.4.8 backup 2 days ago. Everything worked in Joomla 3.4.8

However, looking on Joomla forums it seems the problem is associated with changes to an e-mail API and is affecting other Forms providers, not just Chronoforms.

I don't have enough technical knowledge to understand the options outlined at

https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting

Do you know if this is a problem that will be resolved in the Joomla core or is it something that Chronoforms will address?

Answer
Hi jedlad,

Please try upgrading to Joomla! 3.5.1 as one of the bugs fixed is "Some SMTP emails could no longer be sent due to a bug in the SMTP email server setup"

I've got 3.5.1 running on my test WAMP environment and get the same error.

The Joomla forums are discussing the error on a 3.5.1 thread

Hi jedlad,

Just tested email on my 3.5.1 which is using the Joomla! mail settings to connect to GMail SMTP and that appears to be working OK. No errors and the email is delivered.

I don't see anything in the forum discussion that points to a specific cause for the errors :-(

Are you using the Joomla! mailer settings, or have you configured your mail server in the CF settings?

I should have taken your earlier advice.

After you said you had no issue on 3.5.1 I bit the bullet and updated my live site to 3.5.1.

The e-mails are now coming through again.

I guess that the test site under WAMP on my own PC is not configured properly for e-mails.

Sorry to have messed you about.

You can mark this thread as solved - thanks!
