How can I make Forums invisible for users?

After upgrading to the latest release of Chronoforums, I notice that all forums are visible for all users, even un-published forums. What steps should I take to control not only access but also visibility of forum for different users/groups?

I also just noticed that despite disabling the Private Messaging Function in the Settings, users can still see the messaging icon and open the messaging window. Is there a workaround for this?
